Windows XP SP2 and Vista

Bulletin: 081607-1

Software Effected:
DNSReset

Issue:
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista.

When changing DNS, DNS Suffix, WINS or DNS Default Server settings on remote Windows XP computers, the new settings do not register. This issue only effects Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Vista.

Solution:
By default, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista automatically enables the Windows Firewall. This improved firewall helps protect Windows from viruses, worms, and other security threats that can spread over the Internet. The Windows Firewall will not allow changes to network settings.

In order to Remotely update or change network settings using DNSReset, The Windows Firewall must be temporarily disabled or set to except management mode.

Windows XP SP2 and Vista must be deployed with the appropriate Windows Firewall exception settings to allow the computer to act as a managed computer, a server, a listener, or a peer for those applications and services being used on your network.

Because the deployment of Windows XP and Vista can impact communications on your network, it is highly recommended that you test Windows XP or Vista with critical administrative and business applications before deploying it on your production network.

If Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista has been deployed, It can be safely be disabled if a network firewall or third party firewall is in place. An Administrative account can manually disable the firewall using control panel or by editing the registry entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall
\DomainProfile \EnableFirewall=0 (DWORD data type)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall
\StandardProfile \EnableFirewall=0 (DWORD data type)
